I produced this album, released on Cantaloupe Music in 2005, with Grace Row. Charles Harbutt was the engineer. Grace, Charles and I mixed. We recorded at The Hit Factory in NYC, just months before it closed. It was important to me, and to all of us, to produce this album in a very different way than the classic recordings that already existed by Reich's own group. The idea was to embrace the studio as an instrument the way that so many non-classical records I love do, to make a more immediate, more impactful recording than would be possible with a typical classical, documentary-style approach. In a post Reich Remixed world, I also wanted to address the dance musics that have influenced this piece, and now have been influenced by this piece, from African to raves.
